double consciousness

Double Consciousness, being on the inside and the outside of the American experience simultaneously, is something that is inherited by all Black people and maybe all people of color in America. However, this dual consciousness extends to other circles for me.

I grew up in the culturally rich, predominantly black city of Detroit as a first generation Nigerian American. The Black American experience is such an essential part of my identity, nevertheless my immigrant lineage always made me feel like I had one foot outside of the Black American reality. Because of this upbringing, because of this tension, I have always lived in the in-between - especially creatively.

I took this creative ambivalence with me when I trained and performed at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, Uprights Citizens Brigade, and The People’s Improv Theater in NYC. From there, I performed on countless regional stages, Off-Broadway and in web series, films, and TV. My online satirical work has been reviewed in publications such as the Huffington Post, Blavity and several international online periodicals.
